Swaffham 48 Lakenham Hewett 21
The score line does not show a true reflection of a hard game, where the opposition kept pushing Swaffham until late into the second half. Swaffham took the lead after 5 minutes and were soon on the board again as they went into a 14-0 lead and looked comfortable. However, Lakenham were not going to concede the game so easily and bounced back with a well taken try on the left. Swaffham’s scrum began to work, and a good strike and push gave Andy Tilbrook the chance to score under the posts untouched. The bonus try followed when Tom Foulkes crashed over in the corner, but the visitors struck back quickly to make the score 24-14. Although Swaffham were making good ground, some poor passing wasted scoring opportunities which allowed the visitors to get back into the game. After several drives by the big heavy forwards from Lakenham, Swaffham conceded a try to the right of the posts and 7 points. When the handling went well though, Lakenham could not compete, and Swaffham ended the half 31-21.

The second half was more one sided as Swaffham got their act together and produced some excellent open play which continually broke the gain line. Three tries which counted, were scored, plus the one that put Johnny Warner in under the posts – but the ref said the pass was forward!

A good start to the season against a team that were always going to cause problems, but Swaffham stuck to their plans and with the forwards supplying good possession, the back were able to do their thing.
