Newsletter July 2021 We’re Back!

We’re back! It’s the 40th anniversary season of the formation of Swaffham Rugby Club, and wonderful to see light at the end of the tunnel. We are delighted that Clubs and players across the country we will soon be able to resume training and progress towards contact fixtures, and a full Eastern Counties League programme which is due to start on September 18th away at West Norfolk.

Although the planned music and entertainment on July 4th was cancelled, some rugby was able to go ahead, and four teams from Dereham, Fakenham and Swaffham played a knockout competition, under very friendly conditions. Those that came to watch, were treated to some exciting ball skills, though not much tackling, and it was a great opportunity to blow away some of those cobwebs and take the first steps back to normality.

We are now hoping to reorganise a Return to Rugby Fun Day, which will be full of family entertainment on September 4th. The Clubhouse will be open and there will be child-friendly games and entertainment plus a barbeque. Anyone who wishes to come and see what we have to offer for all ages is welcome, and during the afternoon the seniors will be hosting Watton in our Annual Memorial fixture to honour those members no longer with us.

The Junior section will be starting their season the next day (Sunday Sept 5th) and it is this group which has been affected by the pandemic the most. Numbers attending at the last session in June were down dramatically and we have also lost several of the coaches who helped with these age groups. We are desperate to find new faces who are willing to spend an hour or two a week to develop our future players. So if you have the time, and are prepared to get the RFU qualifications (paid for by the Club), which all our coaches need, then please contact Rob Salter via the website at www.swaffhamrugby.co.cuk

Meanwhile, the Club AGM was held on July 2nd with no changes to the structure and committee, but a determination to start the new season with renewed enthusiasm under new skipper, and ex Junior player, Max Thompson. Lots of work has been done to the excellent facilities we have, including an upgrade to the floodlights, allowing us to play League matches with 3pm kick offs during the winter months. The Senior players have now begun training on Thursday nights from 7.30pm and are looking forward to seeing some new faces to strengthen the current squad. Max can be contacted on 07960270745.
